In the beginning, when we first started working with SQL Server, our servers had a few drive bays built in.  Over time, as we needed more and more storage, we had to transition to Storage Area Networks (SANs).  SANs are independent, flexible, well-protected, and blazing fast – at least in theory.  In reality, most of us see our SAN as a black box; we put data in, we get data out, and we’re not quite sure what’s going on inside.
